NHS Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

Home Services NHS Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) allows NHS prescriptions to be raised (by the receptionist/prescriber), signed (by the prescriber), and received (by the pharmacy) electronically. It eliminates the need for paper and the physical act of picking up the prescription and taking it to the pharmacy for dispensing.

Prior to this service, the only means by which patients could avoid picking up their paper prescription was to authorise a pharmacy local to their GP surgery to do so on their behalf (otherwise known as a collection service). This meant that patients who did not wish to pick up their prescriptions at the surgery could only have them dispensed close to their home, and not close to their work or on their journey to work.

The advent of EPS means that patients can nominate any pharmacy which has gone live with the service to receive their prescription from their GP surgery. Many GPs have already activated EPS capability within their computer systems. To check if your GP surgery has gone live, please click on the link below and select the region in which your GP surgery is situated:

If your surgery has not gone live with EPS yet, keep an eye on the map included in this link, or enquire directly with your surgery to find out when they will be going live. It is only a matter of time before they do so, as this a compulsory requirement for all pharmacies and GP surgeries alike.

At Shantys Pharmacy, our systems have been upgraded quite some time ago. We have a great deal of experience in operating the EPS, as a number of local surgeries have now deployed the service. We have also been able to offer the service to a number of patients who work in and around Whitechapel, or who commute through Whitechapel underground station, but are registered as patients outside the area.

As the patient, all we require is that you order your medicine a week before running out from your surgery, nominate Shantys Pharmacy (see below) as your chosen pharmacy, and provided your GP completes and sends your prescription to us, we will do the rest! All you have to do is come in and collect your prescription!

If you wish to join the many patients already benefiting from this free service, please click on the link below, download our nomination form, complete and return it to us:
