HAJJ & UMRAH
The Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages mean visiting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Pilgrims are asked for a certificate of vaccination against Meningitis A, C, W and Y strains at the port of entry. If the vaccine was not administered ten days prior to entry, or if a certificate cannot be produced, immigration officers in the KSA may refuse entry.
Mecca and Medina can become very crowded, and many pilgrims gather in enclosed spaces. Droplet infections such as Meningitis can spread from person to person very easily and very quickly in such conditions. Outbreaks of meningitis in Mecca and Medina are a constant threat, as many pilgrims travel from central Africa, where control over Miningitis outbreaks is poor, and there is a history of an outbreak after the Hajj of 1987. It is for this reason that the Saudi government insists on vaccination against Meningitis in order to gain entry into Mecca and Medina.
At Shantys Pharmacy, we provide the Conjugate Meningitis ACWY vaccine at a cost of £55.00. This brand of vaccine is the first choice of the Saudi government for vaccination of its own population. You will find many pharmacies offering the vaccine through this partnerships program at the same price or less. In contrast, we offer more value for money by providing you with a full travel consultation, during which we provide tailored advice to keep you safe during your pilgrimage, as well as advice regarding the other vaccines that are required to keep you safe when you are in Saudi Arabia. If necessary, we can also administer those vaccines (at an additional cost).
